Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Cardigan Sold for $137,500
10:33Over the weekend, an auction house in Los Angeles hosted a sale of epic rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, which included a bracelet that belonged to Jimi Hendrix; a few of Michael Jackson’s jackets; and personal items from Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and Freddie Mercury. A sleeper hit of the auction was the olive green cardigan that Kurt Cobain wore onstage when he performed for MTV Unplugged in 1993. Many speculated that the sweater could fetch anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000, but as it turns out, those estimates were considerably low. Even though the mohair-blend sweater has burn marks and is missing a button, this piece of grunge history ended up selling for $137,500. The cardigan was a relative bargain considering that Elvis Presley’s gold-leaf piano went for $600,000 and John Lennon’s Gibson acoustic guitar—which had been thought to be lost for more than 50 years—sold for a record $2,410,000.
