LOS ANGELES — James Bond and Charlie Brown couldn't be more different, but both have a license to print money at the box office.
Spectre opened to a strong $73 million, while The Peanuts Movie did a brisk $45 million in a strong rebound weekend at North American cineplexes. Both films played at around 3,900 theaters, each unseating The Martian, which had stayed on top for more than five weeks while one contender after another burned up in the atmosphere.
With an estimated budget of $250 million, Spectre fell short of the previous franchise high set by Skyfall ($88.4 million), and wasn't able to hit the tracking target of $80 million domestic.
