Chances are you’ve heard the term shibori bandied about, perhaps spotted it in collection notes or heard it on the lips of a well-traveled friend. The technique has inspired pieces on boldfaced runways from Proenza Schouler to Stella McCartney—so what is it? Dating back to the 8th century, the traditional Japanese version of tie-dyeing with indigo yields a bevy of effects, from high-impact and graphic to dreamy, aquatic-looking designs. Now for 3×1’s Spring collection, the denim brand is marrying the heritage of this time-honored m.o. with the heritage of American workwear. Amid his offering of top-notch flares and skinnies, founder Scott Morrison and his team have enlisted traditional Japanese artisans to create a capsule of shibori-dyed styles, including a jumpsuit, crop top, karate pant, and even a limited-run blanket.
